What’s in season this Autumn

14/04/2022

The clocks have gone back for daylight savings, which means summer is officially over. Though of course with Australia’s infamously changeable weather, such definitions must be taken with a grain of salt (it brings out the flavour). In any case, Autumn is in the air, but it’s certainly no reason to despair, for ‘tis the season to be crunchy! There’s the crunch of dried leaves underfoot and the crisp, sweet crunch of an autumn apple undertooth. Whether you’re a Pink Lady fan, love the sour tang of a Granny Smith, or prefer a juicy Fuji baked into an apple crumble, this is the season for you.

But apples are far from all that Autumn has in store for us – April brings the start of the citrus season in Queensland, with Navel oranges and mandarins first out of the gate. Peel one of these for a burst of invigorating fragrance and a sweet, refreshing, vitamin-rich snack. Hot on their heels in May come grapefruit, which will be in season right through the winter, with Queensland passing the citrus-growing baton to Victoria, South Australia and parts of New South Wales. Citrus fruit are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is known to strengthen the immune system and improve skin elasticity. They also contain many other vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, making them an ideal winter snack and kitchen companion.

Throughout Autumn, LPG’s Lancaster Farms are hard at work harvesting tomatoes in our five-hectare retractable roof greenhouse. We’ve got the full-flavoured and tangy Roma tomato with its distinctive elongated shape, perfect for sandwiches, sauces and salads, as well as the classic round Gourmet tomato – a household favourite that’s invariably delicious whether cooked or fresh.

And last but not least, where would LPG be without the original and eternal banana. This grinning compatriot can be counted on come Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter to adorn your cereal, sweeten your smoothie, bind your cake or give you that afternoon pick-me-up without the caffeine comedown. Here in Australia, Autumn brings a special date on the banana appreciation calendar: May 1 is National Banana Day, and we’d love for you to celebrate it with us.

To mark the occasion, LPG is holding a nationwide competition with great prizes – click here to take part and be in to win!
